Thursday 29th March 2007 (Part Deux)
Many thanks to my lovely "adik angkat" Farhan (of bygone days where senior Crescentians and junior Victorians got together as adik/kakak angkat just because our names rhymed!) for making my day with this in my Friendster:
Though I'm not sure how this video would work as a testimonial to me as a person, it sure did rock my world today! As one of my late father's favourite karaoke songs, it used to annoy the puberty hormones out of me as he would sing sing sing the evening away when the mood hits him. This, and a select few of Jamal Mirdad's other songs, would be on our resident karaoke VJ Ruslan A. Rashid's top ten list. And it didn't help that my dad would boogie like one of them dudes in that video. It also didn't help that he, with all his Banjar-ness, looked like one of them dudes in that video. My friends who have met my late father before would readily attest to that. Heh.
But now, it tickles me so, with it's quirky lyrics, simple meaning and catchy tune. What other love song in this world could get away with vivid descriptions of naughty mosquitoes and wild rats as a form of expression to indicate devotion? What other video could get away with a bunch of maniacal men with tambourines and fancy funny pants hopelessly attempting a bunny-hop? Who else but Jamal Mirdad can pull off a hideously yellow shirt with questionable patterns on the sleeves, tied into a knot at the midriff and score with one of the hottest ladies in the kampong? And speaking of fashion, oh... the retro 80's gear in that video (read: shoulder pads, puff sleeves, puff-er skirts, skinny ties with short sleeves).....too cool for school, I tell ya!
And ermm..what could a petugas siskamling be? The policeman? Haahahah........oh well...then methinks the policemen of the world should call themselves petugas siskamling. Sounds a lot cooler kan?
Imagine a scene from NYPD Blue....or okay...Heartlanders.....tough boy in blue kicks open a door exposing an illegal prostitution ring's headquarters, sending a flurry of callgirls to the darkest corners of the room as horny men with eternal erections scurry shamefully to the nearest exits as bright flourescent light floods the dimly lit sin bin. Boy in blue grunts and snorts for effect, whips out his gun and snarls,
"Everybody freeze! You have the right to remain silent! I am a petugas siskambing..I mean, siskamling!"
And barks into his walkietalkie for backup, as there were just too many girls for him and his handcuffs to handle.
Back to the video, I am sufficiently amused and my mood's elevated tenfold. So old skool, so cool. And hey, not too old skool to make me feel too old though. At least the policeman wasn't in shorts. Heh.
And gula jawa rasa coklat?
Itu semua udah beres, dong! Honey, if you're reading this all the way in Sydney, this song's for you.
:)
Thanks for the smile, Farhan!
*hugs*
